Apparel fulfillment that starts at the factory, not the dock

MakeMine runs clothing fulfillment from its own center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Most 3PLs meet your product for the first time on a receiving dock. We've usually been working on it for months.

What is apparel fulfillment?

Apparel fulfillment is storing, picking, packing, and shipping clothing for a brand, set up for what makes clothing hard to ship: a size and color for every style, seasonal drops, and a high share of returns and exchanges. At MakeMine it happens in our own Charlotte, NC fulfillment center, usually for garments our factory network made, so they arrive barcoded, bagged, and ready to scan in.

Why clothing is harder to ship than it looks

Clothing is harder to fulfill than most products because one style turns into dozens of SKUs, sells in drops, and comes back more often. A 3PL that treats a hoodie like a phone case gets the wrong size in the box and the return back on the wrong shelf.

Size and color, SKU by SKU

One style in five sizes and four colors is twenty SKUs. We store and pick by SKU, so every size and color has its own location and a medium never shares a bin with a large.

Drops and preorders

A drop we made lands, gets scanned in, and is on sale the same day. Preorders wait in our warehouse system as backorders and ship within 24 to 48 hours of the stock arriving.

Returns and exchanges

Clothing comes back more than most categories, usually for fit. Returns run through Loop or Redo and are checked against your own returns policy, not ours.

Folded and poly bagged

Garments should arrive folded and poly bagged, and anything we make does. Returned garments are refolded and rebagged before they go back on the shelf.

Hang tags and barcodes

Applied at the factory, not in our warehouse. If you use your own factory, we work with them so every unit arrives tagged and ready to scan.

Flat pack

We flat-pack apparel: folded, bagged, stored by SKU, and shipped in your mailer or box.

From our factory to on sale, the same day

When MakeMine manufactures your clothing, it arrives at our Charlotte warehouse already barcoded, poly bagged, and boxed the way the warehouse needs it, so receiving is a scan and costs nothing.

Other 3PLs charge to receive because someone else's factory packed the boxes its own way. The warehouse has to open every box, count it, sort it, and often label it by hand. We skip that work, so your stock is on sale the day it lands.

Clothing made somewhere else is received at $0.50 per unit. Before the first shipment, we agree with your factory on labels, hang tags, and how the boxes get packed, so it arrives ready to scan too. If you don't have GS1 barcodes yet, we help you set them up.

Returns and exchanges, back on the shelf

Apparel returns at MakeMine run through Loop or Redo, get inspected against your own returns policy, and are either refolded, rebagged, and restocked or set aside.

Your customer starts the return or exchange in Loop or Redo from your store. When the package reaches Charlotte, we open it and check each unit against the standards you set. A unit that passes is refolded, rebagged, and back in its SKU location. A unit that fails is set aside.

Exchanges come through the same apps as new orders, so the replacement syncs to ShipHero and ships from the same stock as every other order. In categories where most returns are size swaps, that matters most: the right size goes out, and the wrong one is sellable again once it passes inspection.

Wholesale and retail orders for apparel brands

Wholesale apparel orders ship as case packs built from size runs, picked from the same stock as your online orders. Because each size and color has its own location, building a case to a retailer's size ratio is a pick, not a sort.

Retailers charge back for a wrong label or a missed routing rule more often than for a late truck. We handle GS1 barcodes, case packs, the packing lists and routing guides each retailer asks for, and the shipping notices they expect ahead of delivery.

Who it's for

Built for apparel brands with steady orders

MakeMine fulfillment is for apparel and lifestyle brands shipping steady order volume, and most often for brands that came to us after a 3PL let them down.

Fulfillment started as an add-on for the brands we manufacture for and grew because they asked. You talk to the people who receive, pick, and ship your orders, not a sales rep.

If your volume is too low for a 3PL to make sense yet, we'll tell you before you sign, not after the first invoice.

Frequently asked questions

Do you poly bag, and what packaging do you use for apparel?

Garments should arrive folded and poly bagged from the factory, and anything we manufacture does. We ship them flat-packed in your own mailers, boxes, and inserts, sourced from your packaging vendor or from our packaging partners for custom and stock boxes. If a shipment does arrive unbagged, we can help in some cases, but we work with your factory so your garments arrive poly bagged.

Do you handle exchanges?

Yes, through Loop or Redo. The returned unit is inspected against your returns policy, then refolded, rebagged, and restocked or set aside. The replacement is a new order in your store, so it ships from the same stock as any other order, same day if it comes in before 12 pm EST.

Can you receive clothing from my current factory?

Yes. Receiving costs $0.50 per unit on inventory we didn't make. Before the first shipment, we agree with your factory on labels, hang tags, and how the boxes are packed, so everything can be scanned in against a packing list.

How are size runs stored and picked?

By SKU. Every size and color is its own SKU with its own location in the warehouse, so a medium never shares a bin with a large. Orders, exchanges, and wholesale case packs are all picked from those locations.

Do you apply hang tags?

Hang tags and barcodes go on at the factory, not in our warehouse. If we make your product, our factory applies them. If you use your own factory, we work with them before the first shipment so every unit arrives tagged, barcoded, and ready to scan.

Is apparel fulfillment more expensive than other ecommerce fulfillment?

Not per unit. Pick and pack costs the same here for clothing as for anything else: $2.00 to $5.00 per unit on DTC orders, with no separate per-order charge. Apparel costs more where it comes back, with returns at $2.00 to $5.00 per unit. Two things keep the total down: receiving is free on anything we make, and shipping is billed at carrier cost with no label markup.
