Who it's for

Grooming brands ready for their own formula

Men's grooming is full of small, founder-run brands. This page is for the founder with somewhere between 500 and 2,000 customers, selling a beard oil mixed at home or a generic private label formula, who wants a product that is theirs.

Moving to production means committing to 1,000 units per fragrance. For a brand at that size, it is often the first real inventory decision, so start with the scents that already sell best.

Beard oil

Beard oil is a blend of carrier oils plus fragrance or essential oils. The carrier oils set how it feels. Jojoba and argan absorb quickly and feel light. Heavier oils sit on the beard and add shine. Most formulas blend two or three to land in between.

Essential oils are the constraint founders miss. They are strong, and a blend that smells right in a test vial can irritate skin at full strength, so the fragrance level is set during formulation, not after. Beard oil ships in small glass bottles with a dropper or a pump. Droppers are traditional. Pumps waste less and travel better.

Beard balm

Beard balm is beard oil with structure: the same oils, set with butters and wax so it conditions and holds stray hairs in place. The wax level sets the hold, from a soft balm that melts in the hand to a firmer one that shapes.

Balm is hot filled, poured warm into the tin or jar, where it sets. The constraint is temperature. A balm firm enough for summer can be hard to scoop in winter, so decide where your customers live and set the texture for it.

Pomade

Pomade comes in two families. Oil-based pomades, built on waxes and oils, give strong shine and long hold, and they are hot filled like a balm. Water-based pomades are made like a gel or cream and rinse out with water, which is their main selling point.

Pick hold and shine as a pair. High hold with high shine, high hold with a matte finish, and a light everyday hold are three different formulas. Pomade sells in tins and jars. Tins are lighter and read classic. Plastic jars show the product and suit water-based formulas.

Aftershave

Aftershave comes in two formats. A balm is a light emulsion, made like a lotion, that cools and moisturizes after a shave. A splash is alcohol-based: it feels sharp and cooling, and it carries fragrance well.

The format decides the labeling. A high-alcohol splash is flammable, which brings labeling and shipping considerations a balm does not have. For a brand that ships every order direct to customers, that difference shows up in shipping costs. If you are unsure which format to launch, the balm fills and ships like a lotion.

Beard wash

Beard wash is a surfactant cleanser, formulated milder than a shampoo because it is used on the face. It is built the same way as our custom shampoos, with the same choice between sulfate-free and conventional systems. Rinse feel matters more than foam: a wash that leaves the beard soft sets up the oil that follows it.

Many brands sell a beard wash and a beard oil as a set in one scent. That is two products, each with 1,000 units per fragrance, so a matched set in one scent is 2,000 units.

From a home-made or generic formula to your own

Many grooming brands start with a recipe mixed in a kitchen or a stock formula from a private label men's grooming supplier. A home-made recipe is yours but was not built for production. A stock formula is built for production but is not yours. We develop a formula to your brief that is both.

If customers already love your current beard oil, send it. It becomes the benchmark, and the new formula is developed to keep what they like.

Our team has developed thousands of personal care and hair care formulas. The full project, from brief to delivery, is on the Beauty & Personal Care page.

Grooming packaging

We can source every component, or fill the components you supply. Our single-head piston fillers put hot and cold products into bottles, tubes, and canisters, which covers dropper bottles for oils and tins and jars for balms and pomades.

The decisions that move cost and timeline: amber or clear glass, dropper or pump, tin or jar, and a printed tin or a labeled one. Printed tins look finished but take longer to source and carry their own minimums. A labeled stock tin gets you to launch faster.

Grooming compliance

Grooming products stay cosmetic. Beard growth claims, and claims to treat beard itch or razor burn, read as drug claims in the US, and they are outside what we make. Condition, soften, tame, and hold are cosmetic.

Essential oils contain fragrance allergens, and selling in the EU means naming them on the label. A high-alcohol aftershave also needs flammability labeling.

Facility compliance across the US, Canada, and the EU is covered on the Beauty & Personal Care page.

Frequently asked questions

Do you make beard oil in small batches?

Our minimum is 1,000 units per fragrance. For a beard oil in one scent, that is your first run: 1,000 bottles, made to a formula you own.

Can I launch a scent collection?

Yes. Each scent carries its own 1,000 unit minimum, so a beard oil in three scents is 3,000 units. Many brands launch with one or two scents and add more once sales show what customers buy.

Tins or jars?

Tins are lighter, travel well, and read classic, which suits oil-based pomade and beard balm. Jars show the product and suit water-based pomade. We can source either, or fill the ones you supply.

Can you replicate my current beard oil?

Yes, as a brief. Send us the product and what your customers like about it. Our formulation team develops a new formula against it, and you own that formula.

What is the timeline for a three-product line?

Samples take 30 days and production takes 90 days. Each product needs an approved sample before production, and each fragrance of each product carries the 1,000 unit minimum, so a beard oil, beard balm, and beard wash in one scent is 3,000 units.
